What’s Happening @Celebrity

A Letter From The General Manager

Dear Valued Patron,

First, I’d like to take the opportunity to thank you, Celebrity Theatre’s loyal patrons, for your continued support. I’ve learned a lot from customer feedback this year! Our staff works tirelessly to ensure a pleasant and safe experience at Celebrity Theatre.

Upgrades and expenses such as sales tax, employee wages, maintenance and repairs continue to increase. Celebrity Theatre is a privately owned & operated facility. Although the theatre has received historic designation, this does not include any financial assistance. Preserving, maintaining and upgrading a historic venue creates unique hurdles. We are faced with challenges unseen by similar facilities that rely on revenue from gaming or city funding. Therefore, we have decided to raise the parking fee. We have taken time to research the cost of parking at other venues/events in the Phoenix area. We feel the increase we have chosen to go with is still a great deal comparatively speaking.

Effective March 20, 2015 parking will increase to $10.00/vehicle.

Some of you may have noticed the exciting changes happening at this historic theatre. Recent upgrades include:

  • Remodeling portions of the theatre, including the downstairs club, backstage dressing rooms & greenroom.
  • New flooring/carpet throughout entire building.
  • New seating in the first three rows, as well as Sections A1, A2 & half of A-11. We have ordered the next round of seats, and hope to have a few more sections completed before summer!
  • Added an additional parking lot.
  • Increased security & police presence to ensure the safety of the artists, patrons & staff.
  • Upgraded stage lighting.
  • Added a selection of assisted listening devices (ALD). At no cost to patrons, the ALD’s include hearing aid compatible neckloops or silhouettes, on demand, and sign language interpreters and Computer Access Realtime Transcription (CART) upon request. To request in advance by email, please click HERE.
  • New Website which includes an FAQ, Photo Gallery & History Timeline.

I have been working for Celebrity Theatre since 1989, and the parking fee has not increased in over 20 years! This increase will enable us to continue to make improvements & help us create a more enjoyable experience for our guests! We appreciate your understanding of this increase, as it was a very difficult decision.

Like us on Facebook & follow us on Twitter, and let us know how we’re doing. Patron feedback is essential to a successful venue.

Again, thank you for your continued support and understanding.

Sincerely,

Alycia Klein
General Manager, Celebrity Theatre

Celebrity Theatre will celebrate its 50th birthday this month. And like for most people who hit the half-century mark, life hasn’t always been easy. Financially, there have been some bumps in the road. There were periods when it felt as if the theater in the round was behind the times. And, of course, there has been a face-lift or two along the way.

After all the ups and downs, the theater still survives. It even got an early birthday present in September, when the Phoenix City Council voted to give the theater historical designation.

“That means a lot, because the theater means a lot to a lot of people,” says Rich Hazelwood, who has owned the theater since 2002. “This is a part of history.”

The venue near 32nd and Fillmore streets is known for offering concerts, and the list of acts who have performed there is breathtaking. But that wasn’t the original intent of the 196-foot-diameter building, which architect Perry Neuschatz designed as a convention center. The facility was part of the now-defunct HiwayHouse Hotel; the idea was for the hotel to lure large conventions and host the attendees…….

Phoenix to vote on historical status for Celebrity Theatre

Celebrity Theatre, at the southwestern corner of 32nd and Fillmore streets, is Phoenix’s third-oldest entertainment venue.

As Celebrity Theatre nears the 50th anniversary of its opening, Phoenix historians want to recognize it as one of the city’s most significant performing-arts structures.

The Phoenix City Council is scheduled to vote on the building’s historical designation on Wednesday, Sept. 18. The building, at the southwestern corner of 32nd and Fillmore streets, is Phoenix’s third-oldest entertainment venue, general manager Alycia Klein said.

Historical preservationists have increased their efforts in recent years to save the city’s historical buildings.

Recognizing Celebrity Theatre is a move in the right direction, said Jennifer Boucek, director of Preserve Phoenix, a non-profit organization focused on preserving the city’s historical sites.

“We have a lot of properties that are going to be coming of age in the next few years, mainly in the Mid-century Modern style, which is really Phoenix’s greatest treasure,” she said. “It’s something we have that a lot of places around the country don’t have. It makes us unique and makes us special.”

Building meets criteria

The theater’s eligibility for recognition is a “no-brainer”, Boucek said.

“It holds great significance from an architectural and structural standpoint. The design has won awards,” she said. “It meets … criteria for designation, so that makes it especially fitting to be part of our historic registry.”
